Senior Social Safeguards Specialist – Road & Highway Projects

About the role

The Senior Social Safeguards Specialist will lead the planning and execution of social safeguard activities for a major road and highway project. This role ensures that all social, resettlement and livelihood restoration measures comply with national regulations and funding agency frameworks.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the preparation, review and implementation of Social Impact Assessments (SIA) and Resettlement Action Plans (RAP).
• Ensure compliance with environmental and social safeguard requirements of the project and funding agencies.
• Engage with local communities, government authorities and stakeholders to address social issues and facilitate project implementation.
• Oversee land acquisition, resettlement, rehabilitation and livelihood restoration activities where applicable.
• Monitor social safeguard performance, prepare periodic progress reports and support grievance redress mechanisms.
• Coordinate with project teams to integrate social safeguards into planning and execution.
• Conduct field visits, stakeholder consultations and capacity‑building programmes.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Social Work, Sociology, Anthropology, Rural Development, Social Sciences or a related discipline.
• Minimum 15 years of professional experience in social safeguards, resettlement, rehabilitation or community development for infrastructure projects.
• Experience on road and highway projects funded by government agencies or multilateral institutions is preferred.
