Municipal Service Laborer

About the role

The Municipal Service Laborer supports the City of Cleveland by performing a wide range of maintenance, cleaning, and waste‑collection tasks across public facilities, streets, parks, and cemeteries. This full‑time, on‑site position requires physical stamina and the ability to operate various city‑owned equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Load and unload materials, supplies, and equipment; operate non‑CDL trucks and other vehicular equipment.
• Clean sidewalks, driveways, bridge decks, garage areas, rest‑room facilities, and outdoor recreation spaces.
• Perform routine building maintenance, including floor, window, and wall cleaning.
• Collect, transport, and dispose of litter, debris, and waste from residential and commercial containers.
• Maintain landscaped areas: mowing, trimming, seeding, planting, and watering.
• Assist with road, park, and cemetery repairs, including excavation, backfilling, and concrete foundation work.
• Operate mechanized hand pumps, waste‑packer loading mechanisms, and other specialized equipment.
• Install temporary fencing and safety barriers in public right‑of‑ways.
• Support water‑treatment plant debris screens and perform minor mechanical repairs.

Required profile

• Valid State of Ohio driver’s license preferred for operating city‑owned vehicles.
• Physical ability to lift, carry, and operate hand‑held tools and equipment.
• Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Commitment to the City’s guiding principles of equity, transparency, and service.

Required skills

• Operation of mechanized hand pumps.
• Operation of non‑CDL licensed trucks and municipal vehicles.
• Use of loading mechanisms on waste‑packer units.
• Basic equipment maintenance and minor mechanical repairs.
