Legal Counsel (Fintech/Payments)

About the role
Money EU is building the next generation of European payment infrastructure and needs a commercially‑minded legal professional to ensure compliance and mitigate risk. This fully remote position supports operations across Spain and Dubai, working closely with senior leadership, product, and compliance teams.
Key responsibilities
- Draft, review and negotiate acquirer agreements, payment processing contracts, client‑facing contracts, onboarding agreements, service terms and merchant agreements.
- Manage court disputes, define litigation strategy and coordinate with external counsel.
- Prepare and submit legal responses to regulatory bodies, financial authorities and third‑party claims.
- Review all incoming and outgoing contracts, including vendor agreements, NDAs, SLAs and partnership agreements.
- Provide ongoing legal guidance on fintech, PSP and payments regulation (PSD2, GDPR, AML/KYC, card‑scheme rules, licensing requirements in Spain and the UAE).
- Collaborate with the executive team to proactively identify and mitigate legal risk.
- Build and maintain standardised contract templates and a legal playbook for the business.
Required profile
- Qualified lawyer (law degree + bar admission or equivalent) in Spain, the EU, UAE or a recognised common/civil law jurisdiction.
- 5+ years of experience in financial services, fintech, payments or banking law, either in‑house or at a specialist law firm.
- Strong familiarity with PSP operations, card‑scheme ecosystems (Visa/Mastercard) and acquirer/issuer relationships.
- Hands‑on experience with commercial contract negotiation and dispute resolution.
- Working knowledge of EU financial regulation (PSD2, EMD2, GDPR, AML) and/or UAE financial regulation (DFSA, CBUAE).
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English; Spanish and/or Arabic are a strong plus.
- High commercial acumen and ability to work independently across multiple workstreams.
