Lead Principal Engineer – HVAC (Building Engineering)

About the role

The Lead Principal Engineer – HVAC will drive the design and delivery of HVAC systems for complex commercial, residential and data‑center projects within AECOM’s Enterprise Capabilities team in Bengaluru. This senior position combines technical leadership, client interaction and mentorship of junior engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Lead HVAC system design for large‑scale commercial, residential and data‑center projects.
• Perform quality‑control reviews of design calculations and drawings.
• Prepare technical specification sections and ensure compliance with ASHRAE, CIBSE and NFPA standards.
• Conduct energy modeling and analysis using tools such as eQUEST, EnergyPlus or IES‑VE to optimise system performance.
• Collaborate with architects and other engineering disciplines to develop integrated design solutions.
• Oversee selection and sizing of HVAC equipment and components.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance to the design team.
• Participate in client meetings, presentations and site visits to verify installations.

Required profile

• Master of Engineering (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
• Extensive experience in HVAC design for retail, hospitality, data‑center and infrastructure projects across multiple geographies (USA, Canada, ANZ).
• Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred.
• Strong knowledge of local building codes and international standards (ASHRAE, CIBSE, NFPA).

Required skills

• Proficiency with HVAC design software such as AutoCAD, Revit MEP or other BIM tools.
• Experience with energy modelling software (eQUEST, EnergyPlus, IES‑VE).
• Knowledge of ASHRAE, CIBSE and NFPA standards.
• Ability to develop sustainable design strategies and meet energy‑efficiency goals.
