Lead Engineer – Controls & Protection

About the role

As a Lead Engineer – Controls & Protection you will design, implement and optimise protection relay systems for EHV/HV substations, ensuring safety, quality, cost and delivery targets are met across global projects.

Key responsibilities

• Produce and review engineering drawings (SLD, KLD, PSLD, CRP) using E‑CAD tools such as Engineering Base, E‑Plan or AutoCAD Electrical for 400/765 kV substations.
• Design and validate substation automation systems based on IEC 61850 and manage their integration with SCADA/SAS.
• Review BOQ, network drawings and equipment specifications for AIS/GIS components (circuit breakers, isolators, transformers, etc.).
• Perform CT/VT sizing calculations and design control/power cable and LV/LT auxiliary systems.
• Develop protection relay settings, coordination studies and tripping analysis.
• Conduct power system studies including load flow and short‑circuit analysis using tools such as ETAP, CANECO or DIG Silent.
• Support renewable, HVDC and FACTS projects and manage SAS/RTU database preparation and I/O mapping.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum 8 years of experience with substation protection relay systems in EHV electrical substations, oil & gas or power transmission.

Required skills

• E‑CAD tools (Engineering Base, E‑Plan, AutoCAD Electrical).
• IEC 61850 substation automation standards.
• CT/VT sizing and cable engineering.
• Protection relay configuration, setting calculations and coordination.
• Power system analysis tools (ETAP, CANECO, DIG Silent).
• SAS/SCADA database preparation and I/O mapping.
• Experience with IEDs, numerical protection relays and BCUs.
