Country Economist

About the role

The Country Economist supports UNDP India’s strategic agenda, providing policy analysis and economic advice to senior management and government partners. Reporting to the Resident Representative and Deputy Resident Representative, the role bridges country‑level work with regional and global economic networks.

Key responsibilities

• Provide economic, social and political analysis to inform the Country Programme Document (CPD) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework.
• Develop thematic policy briefs and analytical outputs aligned with UNDP’s strategic plan.
• Lead the Development Finance Assessment and advise on efficient use of financial resources for SDG delivery.
• Support the preparation of policy notes, speeches, and the National Human Development Report, including data compilation and statistical analysis.
• Collaborate with the RBAP Economist Network, Global Policy Network and other UNDP units to ensure integrated, evidence‑based interventions.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in economics, development studies or a related field.
• Significant experience in economic policy analysis, development finance and SDG‑related work.
• Proven ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and engage with government, private sector and civil‑society partners.
