Arborist II – Civil Service Examination (Cleveland)

About the role

The City of Cleveland is seeking qualified candidates to take the Arborist II civil service examination. Successful examinees will be placed on an eligible list for future openings within the urban forestry department, performing skilled field work and supervising crews that maintain the city’s public trees.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and supervise daily activities of an urban forestry work crew.
• Provide on‑the‑job training for new crew members.
• Prune, remove, and maintain street and public trees, including work on electrical wires using insulated tools.
• Identify dead or hazardous trees and report locations to the urban forestry office.
• Operate and drive an aerial/crew truck to job sites and manage all issued equipment.
• Perform emergency storm response duties, clearing trees and branches from streets.
• Prepare required reports such as injury, accident, and work logs.
• Enforce OSHA and ANSI safety standards and act as site safety coordinator.

Required profile

• High School diploma or GED.
• Four years of full‑time paid experience in urban forestry operations, including climbing and equipment use.
• Valid Ohio driver’s license.
• Experience establishing safe work zones and knowledge of basic climbing and rigging knots.
