Legal Counsel – University Legal & Compliance Lead

About the role

DY Patil University is looking for an experienced Legal Counsel to establish and lead its legal and compliance function. This strategic, full‑time role will oversee all legal matters, litigation, contracts, regulatory compliance, governance, and risk management across the university’s educational and related operations.

Key responsibilities

• Set up and manage the university’s legal and compliance function, including policies, SOPs, and governance frameworks.
• Develop and maintain legal documentation templates, approval workflows, and a structured repository.
• Draft, review, negotiate, and manage contracts, MoUs, vendor agreements, consultancy contracts, and other legal documents.
• Handle civil, criminal, consumer, medico‑legal, labor, service, and regulatory litigation; prepare notices, pleadings, and affidavits.
• Engage and supervise external counsel, monitor case progress, and represent the university before courts and regulatory bodies.
• Provide timely legal advice to management, ensure compliance with applicable laws, and manage licenses, registrations, and regulatory filings.
• Identify legal and compliance risks, support internal audits, and develop risk‑management frameworks.

Required profile

• Significant experience in legal advisory, litigation management, contract negotiation, and regulatory compliance.
• Proven ability to independently manage legal operations and collaborate with senior leadership.
• Strong understanding of laws relevant to higher education and associated healthcare activities.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
