Fintech & Crypto Counsel (Blockchain & Digital Assets)

About the role

We are seeking a senior Fintech & Crypto Counsel to join our specialised law firm in Mumbai. The role involves advising innovative startups, exchanges and financial institutions on regulatory and transactional matters related to virtual digital assets, cryptocurrency, blockchain and payments.

Key responsibilities

• Develop regulatory strategies and advise on licensing requirements for fintech products, crypto exchanges and wallet services in India.
• Design and stress‑test compliance programmes, including KYC/AML frameworks for virtual digital asset service providers.
• Conduct regulatory gap analyses, prepare applications for sandbox approvals and liaise with RBI, SEBI and other authorities.
• Draft and negotiate technology development, digital asset custody and payment service agreements.
• Provide product counselling to product teams on legal implications of DeFi, NFTs and smart contracts.

Required profile

• LL.B. degree (mandatory) and preferably an LL.M. in Financial Regulation, Technology Law or related field.
• Admission to the Bar Council of India and 6‑12 years of post‑qualification experience, with at least 4 years focused on fintech, payments or crypto/blockchain.
• Deep knowledge of RBI sandbox regulations, AML/PMLA, Income Tax, FEMA and SEBI rules on tokenisation and ICOs.
• Proven track record of drafting and negotiating technology and digital asset agreements.

Required skills

• Strong conceptual understanding of blockchain technology, DeFi, NFTs and smart contracts.
• Familiarity with international crypto regulatory frameworks such as FATF guidance and US/EU regimes.
• Experience leading client advisory projects and preparing regulatory approval applications.
