Assistant Vice President – Legal Counsel (Banking & Finance)

About the role

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) is seeking an Assistant Vice President – Legal Counsel to provide expert legal advice and risk management for its corporate and investment banking activities in India. The role supports a wide range of financing products and capital‑market transactions, acting as a trusted business partner for MUFG’s banking operations.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver legal advice and transaction support for corporate banking, project finance, aviation finance, acquisition finance, real‑estate finance, export credit, commodity, ESG and capital‑markets products.
• Liaise with clients, external counsel and transaction parties to ensure smooth execution of syndicated loans, bond issuances and other financing structures.
• Collaborate with MUFG’s India legal team, international legal units and local subsidiaries to align legal strategies across jurisdictions.
• Provide pragmatic, cost‑effective legal solutions while keeping senior management informed of material legal developments and legislative changes.
• Support group‑wide projects, litigation matters and the coordination of MUFG’s local legal offices in India.
• Assist the Head of Legal, India in global and regional initiatives, supervising legal affairs and optimizing internal and external legal resources.

Required profile

• Qualified Indian lawyer with a minimum of 8 years post‑qualification experience.
• Strong knowledge of banking and finance transaction documentation, including Loan Market Association (LMA) standards.
• Prior in‑house experience within a financial institution is highly desirable.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex legal risk in corporate and investment banking environments.
