Legal Counsel, Regulatory & Advisory

About the role

PhonePe Limited is seeking a Legal Counsel to support its regulatory and advisory functions across its payments and financial services platforms. The role involves drafting, negotiating and finalising contracts with external clients, and providing legal guidance to protect the business from exposure.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, negotiate and close contracts with external clients, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
• Provide legal advice on policies, documents, contracts and agreements related to payments and financial services.
• Monitor the regulatory landscape, interpret new legislation, amendments and notifications, and communicate implications to relevant internal teams.
• Advise compliance and business units on ongoing and emerging legal risks.
• Review and vet official communications and documentation within stipulated timelines.
• Coordinate with business leads to ensure timely closure of agreements and escalation when necessary.
• Track licence applications and renewals, ensuring timely submissions to regulatory authorities.
• Maintain a database of applicable laws, FAQs and best‑practice guidelines, and keep management informed of regulatory changes.

Required profile

• Experience in business drafting, contract negotiation and closure.
• Strong understanding of payments, digital distribution and financial services regulations.
• Ability to analyse and interpret legislative changes and advise stakeholders.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet strict timelines.
• Proactive approach to maintaining legal knowledge bases and advising management.
