Software Engineer - Mainframe

About the role

Barclays is hiring a Software Engineer - Mainframe in Pune, India, to lead the evolution of its infrastructure and deployment pipelines. The role builds and manages robust, scalable and secure infrastructure that delivers digital solutions to customers and colleagues. The position is permanent and based in Pune.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and improve software using engineering methodologies, providing business, platform and technology capabilities for customers and colleagues.
• Develop and deliver high-quality software using industry-aligned programming languages, frameworks and tools, keeping code scalable, maintainable and performance-optimized.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers and other engineers to define requirements, devise solution strategies and ensure integration with business objectives.
• Take part in code reviews, promote code quality and share knowledge.
• Follow secure coding practices and implement unit testing to ensure reliable, readable code.
• Stay informed of technology trends and contribute to the organization's technology communities.

Required profile

• Strong, proven experience in Mainframe application design, development and technical leadership.
• Experience in mainframe modernization and API enablement, including z/OS Connect.
• Hands-on experience adopting generative AI and AI-assisted tools for understanding, development or testing.
• Ability to review and assure solution and design quality, guide large-scale implementations and unblock delivery teams.
• Understanding of performance engineering and production stability.
• Legal right to work in India; the role may be subject to enhanced governance and regulatory compliance obligations.

Required skills

• Mainframe technologies: COBOL, JCL, IMS / DB/DC, DB2, VSAM, CICS, TWS (scheduling), Stored Procedures and REXX.
• Mainframe engineering: debugging, performance optimization and change management tooling (e.g. Endeavor, Abend-Aid, File-Aid, DB2 Platinum).
• Valued: mainframe DevOps, automation, modernization practices, banking domain knowledge.
