Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (Python)

About the role

NetApp is looking for a highly motivated Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (Python) to join its ONTAP Engineering team, which focuses on SAN and block storage solutions. ONTAP is a feature-rich storage platform used in mission-critical cloud, hybrid and on-premise deployments. The role designs and develops scalable test frameworks, automation infrastructure and validation pipelines, works across subsystems and drives quality at scale. It is an advanced individual contributor position.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable test automation frameworks and infrastructure using Python
• Own end-to-end validation of SAN/block storage features, including test design, execution and defect lifecycle management
• Collaborate with development teams to define validation strategies and improve testability early in the cycle
• Develop functional, integration, stress and scale tests for distributed storage systems
• Drive automation-first testing and improve code and test coverage
• Analyze failures, debug complex issues and drive root cause resolution
• Contribute to product design discussions on reliability, observability and diagnosability
• Lead or contribute to test planning, quality reviews and release readiness
• Work with Dev, QA and Field Support teams and mentor junior engineers

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (Master's preferred)
• 8-12 years of relevant industry experience
• Proven track record of owning and delivering quality for complex subsystems
• Ability to work independently on complex problems
• Preferred: deep expertise in SAN/block storage (ONTAP, SnapMirror, SVM, HA/MetroCluster), large-scale system validation, cloud-integrated storage, and prior SDET experience driving automation strategy

Required skills

• Strong Python programming and experience building automation frameworks
• System-level testing and debugging of distributed systems
• Solid understanding of Linux/Unix, multithreading and system internals
• Storage technologies, preferably SAN protocols (FC, iSCSI, NVMe-oF)
• Test automation for scale, performance and stress scenarios
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, test infrastructure and modern development workflows
