Senior Database Operations Engineer

About the role

Crunchyroll’s Data Engineering team is expanding to support millions of anime fans worldwide. As a Senior Database Operations Engineer you will maintain and improve the reliability, performance, and scalability of the company’s data infrastructure. You will work closely with data engineers and software engineers to drive automation, monitoring, and best‑practice standards across all databases.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the strategic subject‑matter expert for database engine best practices, storage engines, and long‑term data placement strategy.
• Optimize SQL queries, indexes, execution plans and data models to maximize throughput and minimize latency.
• Design, scale, and evaluate schemas using AWS‑native services such as Amazon RDS, Aurora (MySQL/PostgreSQL) and DynamoDB.
• Perform deep‑dive performance forensics on database internals, replication lag, locking mechanisms and OS/hardware metrics.
• Mentor internal application and data teams on data access patterns, indexing standards and schema configurations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field.
• 8+ years of experience in database operations or data platform management.
• Strong expertise with AWS RDS, Aurora and NoSQL databases.
• Proficiency with monitoring tools such as Datadog, CloudWatch, DevOps Guru and DB Performance Insights.
• Experience programming in Python or Java and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and IaC.
