Principal Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

About the role

We are seeking a Principal Engineer – BESS (Renewables) to join AECOM’s Energy team in India. This position offers the chance to work on impactful energy storage and renewable projects across global offices while developing technical expertise in a high‑performing, supportive environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead electrical design for BESS and renewable projects, covering FEED, detailed design and assurance.
• Design BESS balance‑of‑plant (BOP) systems and develop grid‑connection solutions from 11 kV to 400 kV.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients to deliver innovative solutions for large‑scale projects, primarily in the UK, Ireland and other global locations.
• Undertake FEED, planning, feasibility studies and support bidding, project and quality management activities.

Required profile

• Experience with consultancy, contractor, equipment manufacturer or electrical utility in the energy sector.
• Background as a FEED designer, detailed designer or owner’s engineer with 10‑14 years of relevant exposure.
• Strong understanding of renewable generation, battery storage technologies and MV/HV grid‑connection requirements (including G99, G100 and grid codes).
• Knowledge of electrical plant components such as transformers, cables, circuit breakers and protection & control systems.

Required skills

• Proficiency with HOMER and Microsoft Excel.
• Experience using AutoCAD, EnergyPro, CYMCAP, Cableizer, Autodesk Construction Cloud, ETAP and DigSILENT.
