Material and Process Engineer – Failure Analysis & Material Testing

About the role

Join the Materials, Processes & Test department to lead failure investigations and material test campaigns for aircraft components. You will work on both metallic and non‑metallic parts, ensuring compliance with Airbus test methods worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive failure analyses on aircraft parts using FE‑SEM, EDS and metallurgical microscopy.
• Prepare cross‑sections, evaluate grain structures, plating thickness and heat‑treatment integrity.
• Define test plans and qualify global test laboratories for Airbus methods.
• Maintain existing lab facilities and introduce new equipment as needed.
• Implement and improve quality systems (ISO 17025) within the laboratory.
• Lead test campaigns, produce technical reports and ensure delivery within time, cost and quality targets.
• Create work instructions, SOPs and other technical documentation.
• Drive digitalisation and automation projects in the lab environment.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD in Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 3‑5 years of hands‑on experience with aerospace materials, component testing and failure analysis.
• Proven ability to read manufacturing/design drawings and BoMs.
• Strong project‑management skills in a multicultural setting.

Required skills

• Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE‑SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS).
• Metallurgical microscopy, precision cutting, mounting, grinding and polishing.
• Knowledge of ISO 17025 and international testing standards (ASTM, AMS, EN, BS).
• Experience with statistical methods, DOE software (JMP, Minitab) and process capability studies.
• Lab qualification, surface‑treatment, chemical conversion coating and paint testing.
