Legal Officer – Mining Dispute Management

About the role

The Legal Officer will manage legal disputes arising within the Mines division, ensuring timely and effective resolution of court cases and maintaining compliance with relevant statutes. The role requires close liaison with government departments, the judiciary, and internal stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Dispose of court cases by preparing action plans, briefing advocates, and drafting petitions in accordance with applicable Acts and rulings.
• Develop awareness of legal compliance, analyze law application to mining operations, prepare checklists, circulars, and conduct periodic legal audits.
• Provide regular updates to senior management, including monthly statements of pending and disposed matters across courts.
• Liaise with government departments such as police, forest, mining, and administration, as well as the judiciary, to facilitate early settlement of cases.
• Offer legal assistance, prepare legal opinions, coordinate with concerned parties, and ensure readiness for court appearances.

Required profile

• Law degree (LL.B or equivalent) with knowledge of mining regulations.
• Proven experience in handling litigation and legal disputes, preferably in the mining or natural resources sector.
• Strong analytical skills to interpret statutes and prepare compliance documentation.
• Excellent communication skills for briefing advocates and liaising with government bodies.
• Ability to prepare detailed reports and maintain accurate case tracking.
