Gallery Director, Curator of Exhibitions & Programs

About the role

The Gallery Director, Curator of Exhibitions & Programs serves as the ambassador for The Art Students League, leading its gallery exhibitions, permanent collection, and related programs. This senior role oversees the planning and execution of multiple annual exhibitions, talks, and collaborations with external curators.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and curate student, instructor, and collection exhibitions across the League’s gallery, lobby, registration, and café spaces.
• Organize the annual Instructor Salon exhibition, 1‑2 collection‑based shows, quarterly lobby exhibitions, and at least four student exhibitions each year.
• Produce exhibition catalogues, manage image rights, and coordinate document gathering and editing.
• Hire and supervise external curators and provide guidance to gallery staff.
• Develop and implement a strategy for the permanent collection and archives, working with the Director of Development on donations and fundraising.
• Manage gallery and collection budgets and collaborate on grant initiatives.
• Present donation offers to the Board’s Collections Committee and conduct related research.

Required profile

• Recognized experience in an art gallery, museum, school, or similar organization.
• Extensive background in exhibition organization and coordination.
• Excellent written, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage staff and work collaboratively with instructors, students, and the broader League community.
