Band 5 Ophthalmology Staff Nurse (Gartnavel General Hospital)

About the role

We are seeking a Band 5 NMC‑registered Staff Nurse to join the Ophthalmology outpatient department at Gartnavel General Hospital. The role involves delivering high‑quality, evidence‑based nursing care to patients attending the eye clinic, working closely with a multidisciplinary team of nurses, healthcare support workers and medical staff.

Key responsibilities

• Assess patient needs, plan, implement and evaluate individual care programmes in the ophthalmology outpatient setting.
• Maintain accurate patient records in line with NMC guidelines and NHS policies.
• Deliver care within the legal and ethical framework set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and relevant legislation.
• Collaborate with nursing and medical teams to ensure safe, patient‑centred services.
• Empower patients to take responsibility for their eye health by providing clear information and support.
• Complete clinical appraisals for pre‑ and post‑registration nurses and contribute to professional development activities.
• Identify and support research or clinical audit projects relevant to ophthalmology care.

Required profile

• Current, active NMC UK PIN.
• Registered Nurse (Band 5) with experience or strong interest in ophthalmology.
• Ability to work flexibly in a busy, dynamic clinical environment.
• Excellent communication, decision‑making and teamwork skills.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development.
• Availability for a dayshift pattern (Monday‑Saturday) on a 36‑hour week.

Required skills

• Clinical assessment and care planning in an outpatient setting.
• Record‑keeping in accordance with NMC standards.
• Knowledge of NHS policies, health and safety legislation and ethical guidelines.
