Staff Backend Engineer – Founding Team (Remote)

About the role

Nola, an early‑stage fintech, is looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to join the founding team. You will build the product from 0‑1, own the backend architecture, and help shape engineering practices in a lean, remote team.

Key responsibilities

• Take end‑to‑end ownership of Nola’s backend systems and evolve them from scratch.
• Design scalable APIs, services, data models, and overall system architecture.
• Work across the full stack when needed while primarily focusing on backend engineering.
• Leverage AI tools and LLMs to accelerate development, testing, and operational workflows.
• Partner closely with the founding team to influence product and technical decisions.
• Deliver features from idea to production, handling design, implementation, testing, and iteration.
• Make pragmatic technology choices for a fast‑moving, small team.
• Own reliability, performance, security, and maintainability of the platform.
• Proactively identify and solve technical problems without waiting for direction.

Required profile

• 7‑10 years of software engineering experience, primarily with NodeJS and Typescript.
• Strong backend engineering background with full‑stack capability.
• Experience in product‑focused organisations and taking products or major features from 0‑1.
• Proven ability to work independently and own outcomes in a lean team.
• Experience designing backend systems, APIs, databases, and production services.
• Active user of AI/LLM tools in daily engineering workflows and personal AI projects.
• Curious, self‑learning mindset with personal or open‑source projects outside work.
• Comfortable making engineering and product decisions with limited structure.
• Excellent problem‑solving, debugging, and communication skills.
