Software Engineering Lead - Java FSE

About the role

Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, is hiring a Software Engineering Lead for its Java FSE program in Hyderabad. The role acts as a hands-on engineering practitioner and technical subject matter expert, supporting software engineering learning initiatives and building practical, production-ready training content.

Key responsibilities

• Design, review and maintain sample code, labs, demos and reference implementations used in OTU programs, ensuring they reflect real-world engineering practice
• Develop guardrail-aligned usage examples, secure AI development patterns and production workflows for AI-assisted coding tools such as Codex or Claude
• Translate complex technical concepts into clear explanations for engineers at different experience levels
• Partner with instructional designers on accurate, accessible and scalable learning content, and contribute to role-based learning pathways and learner readiness guidance
• Deliver hands-on training sessions, workshops and live labs, and pilot and improve them based on feedback
• Work with Tiger Teams, cloud and security SMEs and platform owners to align content with enterprise standards and developer workflows

Required profile

• Full-time graduate degree or equivalent experience
• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Experience supporting engineers in live labs, including debugging and guidance without taking over execution
• Demonstrated experience facilitating technical training, workshops or hands-on labs
• Experience curating technical content such as documentation, labs and reference materials

Required skills

• Modern development practices: cloud-native development, APIs, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing
• Enterprise-scale environments with governance, security and compliance requirements
• Experience with an LMS such as Cornerstone
• Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP)
• Experience with AI-assisted development tools and ML-adjacent workflows
• Ability to write, review, explain and teach code clearly
