Senior Software Engineer II - AS 400, Synon

About the role

Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, is hiring a Senior Software Engineer II in Hyderabad to lead the design, development, delivery and support of RxClaim Core Adjudication capabilities across Government, Commercial and Compliance initiatives. The role provides technical leadership for Synon (CA 2E), AS400/iSeries, DB2, COBOL and enterprise adjudication solutions, and drives modernization of legacy platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, delivery and support of RxClaim Core Adjudication capabilities across Government, Commercial and Compliance initiatives.
• Provide technical leadership for Synon (CA 2E), AS400/iSeries, DB2, COBOL and enterprise adjudication solutions.
• Drive end-to-end execution of strategic enhancements, regulatory compliance changes and modernization initiatives.
• Partner with Product, Business, Architecture and Operations teams to turn business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Ensure application stability, performance, reliability, security and adherence to healthcare and regulatory requirements.
• Mentor engineers, establish engineering best practices and drive continuous improvement across design, development, testing and deployment.
• Lead root-cause analysis and resolution of complex production issues affecting pharmacy claims adjudication.
• Modernize legacy platforms through automation, API enablement, reusable assets and engineering efficiency initiatives.
• Champion AI-driven engineering practices using Microsoft Copilot, generative AI, AI-assisted development, knowledge hubs and intelligent documentation.
• Define technology strategy, capacity planning, risk management and execution roadmaps with leadership.
• Deliver high-quality results through Agile practices, engineering governance, code quality standards and operational excellence.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or a related field.
• 12+ years of software engineering experience with significant expertise in AS400/iSeries and Synon (CA 2E) development.
• Experience leading complex application development, maintenance, modernization and production support initiatives.
• Experience delivering Government Programs, Compliance, regulatory and healthcare-related enhancements.
• Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage technical risks and drive strategic business outcomes.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, stakeholder management and leadership skills.

Required skills

• Deep knowledge of RxClaim Core Adjudication and pharmacy benefit management (PBM) processes.
• Solid understanding of software architecture, SDLC, Agile, DevOps, CI/CD and engineering governance.
• Proficiency in Synon, RPG, COBOL, CL, DB2/400, SQL and high-volume transactional systems.
• Preferred: hands-on experience with Generative AI tools (Microsoft Copilot, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude), AI certifications, RxClaim modernization, APIs, cloud technologies, NCPDP standards and mentoring engineers.
