Software Engineering Lead

About the role

The Software Engineering Lead at relx in Chennai is a hands‑on subject‑matter expert who provides technical leadership, delivery ownership and people management for a cross‑functional team delivering defined products and services.

Key responsibilities

• Set technical direction and ensure architectural and structural oversight of designs.
• Own delivery outcomes such as predictability, throughput, quality, and customer value, using metrics like cycle time and defect rates.
• Drive planning, capacity and dependency management and maintain transparent delivery plans.
• Balance product growth with technical enablement, addressing tech debt, reliability and security.
• Act as the engineering voice in roadmap prioritisation, ensuring clear, testable requirements aligned with architecture constraints.
• Provide line management, conduct HR duties (absence, performance, disciplinaries), and serve as an escalation point.
• Participate in hiring, onboarding, and ensure team members receive necessary training and resources.
• Coach, mentor and give frequent feedback to foster autonomy, ownership and a high‑performance inclusive culture.
• Proactively surface risks, propose mitigations and keep roadmaps up to date.

Required profile

• Proven experience as an engineering leader and people manager for a cross‑functional software team.
• Strong ability to analyse product roadmaps and assess technical feasibility of development projects.
• Accountability for engineering outcomes including quality, reliability, security, compliance, cost and speed.
• Experience in building inclusive, psychologically safe cultures and resolving conflicts constructively.
• Hands‑on technical expertise to guide architectural decisions and delivery execution.
