Software Engineer I

About the role

Software Engineer I will join the Enterprise Technology Services team, supporting American Express’s global technology, digital and data platforms. The role focuses on developing, maintaining and enhancing software applications that enable business and customer experiences.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, enhance, and maintain software applications to meet business and customer needs.
• Write clean, efficient, scalable, and well‑documented code following engineering standards.
• Participate in code reviews and automated testing, incorporating feedback from peers and technical leaders.
• Design, build, and maintain responsive web applications using modern technologies.
• Troubleshoot and resolve software defects by analyzing root causes and implementing fixes.
• Support, monitor, and maintain applications across development, testing, integration, and production environments.
• Collaborate with product, business, and engineering teams to align technical solutions with organizational goals.
• Develop an understanding of system integrations, dependencies, and platform interactions.
• Manage priorities and deliverables independently while contributing positively within a team.
• Leverage AI‑powered tools to improve productivity, code quality, and engineering efficiency.
• Continuously learn and apply new technologies, tools, and best practices.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
• Foundational understanding of the software development lifecycle, including planning, analysis, development, testing, and deployment.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
• Strong problem‑solving mindset and willingness to continuously learn.
