Senior Systems Engineer I

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to design, build, and operate secure, scalable, and highly‑available AWS infrastructure that supports multiple product engineering teams. The role sits within Elsevier Health, part of relx, and focuses on delivering reliable cloud platforms while maintaining strong security and operational standards.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform with modular, reusable patterns.
• Operate and support production AWS environments across several accounts and regions.
• Create and manage CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions for application and infrastructure deployments.
• Build, deploy and manage containerised workloads on Amazon ECS Fargate.
• Administer Amazon RDS PostgreSQL instances, ensuring availability, performance and backup readiness.
• Design secure AWS networking and IAM architectures.
• Respond to production incidents, perform root‑cause analysis and implement preventive measures.
• Automate operational tasks with Bash, Python and AWS CLI.
• Collaborate with development teams to provide self‑service infrastructure and reduce bottlenecks.
• Review infrastructure changes for risk, security impact and deployment safety.
• Maintain technical documentation, runbooks and disaster‑recovery procedures.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT or a related field.
• 6–9 years of experience in DevOps, Cloud or Systems Engineering.
• Proven experience operating large‑scale production AWS environments.

• Terraform (modules, state management, remote back‑end).
