Senior Manager of AI/ML Engineering

About the role

Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, is hiring a Senior Manager of AI/ML Engineering in Bangalore. You will lead a collaborative AI Platform team building a payer-focused agentic platform that connects data, models and workflows to support complex healthcare operations. The role provides onshore leadership for AI platform execution and forward deployment across Payment Integrity and Optum Real, ensuring secure, scalable delivery of reusable AI services.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic and technical leadership for AI platform execution and deployment, ensuring secure, reliable and scalable delivery of reusable AI services.
• Lead and inspire a team of AI/ML engineers and senior staff, set clear AI development goals and foster a culture of trust, ownership and product quality.
• Design and deploy AI-powered solutions and agent-driven applications that review and reason over clinical and administrative data in customer environments.
• Apply AI to deployment automation, automated testing, continuous integration and production observability, and integrate enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline engineering workflows.
• Embed transparency, fairness and accountability across the AI lifecycle of reusable services.
• Partner with product managers, customer integration teams and enterprise leaders to accelerate platform reuse and drive repeatable revenue.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, Statistics or a related quantitative field, or 4+ years of equivalent software engineering experience.
• 12+ years in software engineering or data analytics, with 3+ years in AI/ML engineering or related fields.
• 3+ years managing, coaching and developing engineering teams of 5+ people, including senior engineers.
• 2+ years of hands-on experience with Generative AI technologies such as LLMs, LangChain, AI agents, RAG, vector databases, prompt engineering and model fine-tuning.
• Experience leading AI/ML projects from ideation through production delivery and evaluation.

Required skills

• DevSecOps and automated CI/CD (Git, Jenkins).
• Python or another programming language for data analysis and AI/ML development.
• Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP) and containerization/orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Preferred: experience with AI/ML best practices, ethics guidelines, payment integrity, clinical operations or healthcare claims, and mixed onshore/offshore teams.
