Deputy Ward Manager – Senior Staff Nurse (Older Peoples Services)

About the role

This position is for an experienced Registered Nurse who will act as Deputy Ward Manager within the Older Peoples Services at Vale of Leven Hospital. You will combine hands‑on clinical care with leadership duties to ensure high‑quality, person‑centred nursing for a defined patient group.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Ward Manager in day‑to‑day operational management of the ward.
• Lead, coordinate and evaluate evidence‑based nursing care for older patients.
• Supervise, mentor and develop registered nurses, healthcare support workers and learners.
• Assist with staff rostering, sickness absence management and workforce planning.
• Participate in recruitment, appraisal processes and personal development planning.
• Promote an inclusive environment for patients, families, carers and colleagues.
• Ensure effective use of resources, equipment and clinical systems while maintaining professional standards.

Required profile

• First‑level Registered Nurse with a current NMC UK PIN.
• Post‑registration nursing experience, preferably in older peoples services.
• Relevant post‑registration qualification or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrable clinical expertise and ability to deliver safe patient care.
• Strong leadership and people‑management capabilities.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently, use sound judgement and contribute to service improvement.
