Lead Electrical Engineer – HVDC Systems for PMC

About the role

As a Lead Electrical Engineer you will guide the technical review and assurance of HVDC converter stations and associated transmission infrastructure for AECOM’s Project Management Consultancy assignments. You will ensure designs meet employer requirements, grid‑code obligations and performance criteria while supporting clients through procurement, construction and commissioning.

Key responsibilities

• Lead technical reviews of HVDC system designs, converter‑station configurations and overall architecture.
• Validate contractor and OEM engineering documents against IEC, IEEE, CIGRE and utility standards.
• Assess power‑system studies including load flow, fault level, harmonic, EMT and stability analyses.
• Review specifications of major HVDC equipment such as converters, transformers, reactors, filters, switchgear and protection systems.
• Support factory acceptance tests, site inspections, SAT and commissioning activities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering.
• Minimum 12 years of experience in HVDC, high‑voltage substations or power‑system studies.
• Proven experience in PMC, Owner’s Engineer or EPC design‑review roles.
• Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer registration preferred.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of LCC‑HVDC and VSC‑HVDC technologies.
• Proficiency with PSS®E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, EMTP‑RV or ATP.
• Familiarity with IEC, IEEE and CIGRE standards for high‑voltage equipment.
• Experience reviewing converter transformers, valve cooling systems, reactors, harmonic filters and SCADA/telecommunications interfaces.
