Associate General Counsel – AI Regulatory Lead (India)

About the role

OpenAI is seeking an experienced legal professional to lead its AI regulatory and policy efforts in India. Reporting to the Head of Legal, APAC, you will shape the company’s approach to emerging AI legislation and ensure compliance across the region.

Key responsibilities

• Analyze Indian AI laws and regulations to assess impact on OpenAI and the broader AI ecosystem.
• Develop policy positions on frontier and pending legislation as well as international standards.
• Partner with the Global Affairs team on regulatory strategy and stakeholder engagement.
• Manage Indian regulatory compliance matters.
• Collaborate with Product Legal teams to support the responsible deployment of OpenAI’s products and services in India.
• Contribute to AI governance improvements as new regulations take effect.
• Monitor and inform the broader legal team about emerging AI legislative and regulatory developments in APAC.

Required profile

• 12+ years of legal and/or policy experience.
• Strong leadership and influencing abilities.
• Experience in in‑house, government/institution, or law‑firm settings.
• Solid background in technology law.
• Familiarity with AI regulations or a demonstrated interest in AI law.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, capable of simplifying complex concepts.
• Proven track record analyzing complex legislation.
• Experience engaging with regulators and policymakers.
