Staff Nurse

About the role

The Staff Nurse provides direct bedside care and technical support across multiple hospital units, including general wards, operating theatres, intensive care, and maternity services. The role requires a professional, skilled nurse who can act independently and step in as a de‑facto sister when needed.

Key responsibilities

• Assess patient needs, develop nursing care plans in consultation with the ward sister, and deliver comprehensive bedside care (bed making, hygiene, feeding, positioning).
• Manage shift handovers, ensuring continuity of patient care, medication, and equipment.
• Prepare and maintain operation‑theatre trolleys, check medical gases, emergency drugs, and assist surgeons and anaesthetists during procedures.
• Count instruments and sponges, monitor patients intra‑operatively and in the recovery room, and act as OT sister in her absence.
• Maintain labour‑room readiness: carbolise, autoclave instruments, prepare confinement and emergency trolleys, and use partographs to assess labour progress.
• Assist doctors during deliveries, provide newborn care and resuscitation, and perform episiotomy wound repair.
• Supervise students and ancillary staff, follow waste‑management protocols, and keep unit logbooks up to date.

Required profile

• Registered professional nurse with experience in general ward, operating theatre, intensive care or maternity units.
• Ability to work autonomously, maintain professionalism, and step into supervisory roles when required.
• Strong attention to patient safety, hygiene, and infection‑control standards.

Required skills

• Operation‑theatre assistance and instrument counting.
• Medical‑gas system checks (oxygen, CO₂, nitrous oxide).
• Patient monitoring during surgery and in recovery.
• Fumigation and sterilisation of OT equipment.
• Carbolising and autoclaving of labour‑room instruments.
• Use of partograph for labour assessment.
• Newborn resuscitation and basic obstetric care.
