Senior Software Engineer – Onboarding & Activation

About the role

Bitwarden is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to own the back‑end logic that drives user onboarding, trial activation, and paywall entitlement. You will work closely with the Billing team to ensure revenue‑critical flows are correct, secure, and reliable.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain back‑end logic for trial initiation, lifecycle management, and eligibility rules.
• Design and operate entitlement and paywall gating services that stay in sync with user plans and trial states.
• Develop services and data models that track a user’s onboarding and activation progress, coordinating with client‑side guided‑setup.
• Coordinate API contracts with the Billing team and flag changes that could affect correctness.
• Implement clean, testable services with explicit success, error, conflict, and unhandled outcomes.
• Author backwards‑compatible data access and schema changes for evolving trial and onboarding data.

Required profile

• 6‑10 years of back‑end software engineering experience, capable of owning services and state‑transition logic.
• Strong focus on correctness and security, especially for systems affecting user access and payments.
• Proficiency in relational data modeling and SQL with ability to make safe, additive schema changes.
• Self‑directed and effective collaborator on a distributed, asynchronous team.
• Experience with subscription, trial, or entitlement/feature‑gating systems and API integration.

Required skills

• C#/.NET (ASP.NET Core) – preferred
• Java, Kotlin, Go or similar statically‑typed language
• SQL and relational database design
• Feature‑flagging tools (e.g., LaunchDarkly)
