Senior Software Engineer – Application Framework

About the role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Software Engineer with a deep understanding of low‑level systems to join our team. In this role you will design, develop, and optimise application frameworks that serve as the building blocks for all software development at Databricks.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain core system infrastructure and low‑level software components.
• Optimise system performance, reliability and scalability through analysis and innovative solutions.
• Work with JVM internals, memory management, concurrency and distributed systems.
• Collaborate with senior engineers and architects to define technical strategies and roadmaps.
• Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of technical excellence.
• Troubleshoot complex system issues and provide effective resolutions.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• 7+ years of professional software development experience.
• Proven track record of building and optimising high‑performance, scalable, reliable systems.
• Strong problem‑solving, analytical and debugging abilities.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Required skills

• Deep knowledge of Java Virtual Machine (JVM) internals – garbage collection, JIT compilation, class loading, memory model.
• Proficiency in at least one JVM language (Scala, Java) and experience with Rust or other systems‑level languages.
• Operating‑system concepts – processes, threads, concurrency, scheduling, I/O.
• Distributed‑systems concepts and technologies.
• Performance profiling and tuning tools.
• Experience with RPC frameworks.
