Senior Engineering Manager, AI Agents

About the role

Senior Engineering Manager, AI Agents will lead the development and delivery of Five9’s AI Agent software platform, providing fully autonomous self‑service agents for customer support, sales and services use cases. The role is responsible for building and managing a high‑performing engineering team that creates scalable, reliable, production‑grade AI‑powered systems used in real‑time customer conversations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead architecture, design and implementation of the AI Agent platform and ensure end‑to‑end delivery.
• Hire, mentor and develop engineers, and continuously improve engineering processes across the software development lifecycle.
• Collaborate with Product, Site Reliability Engineering, Support and other engineering teams to deliver an enterprise‑grade solution.
• Drive operational excellence by applying SRE principles, incident response and observability practices.

Required profile

• 10+ years of software development experience, including 5+ years in enterprise SaaS and Java development.
• 1+ years experience building GenAI platforms for customer support or experience.
• Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field.
• Proven experience hiring and leading engineering teams and using AI coding assistants such as Claude Code.

Required skills

• Expert‑level Java and JVM frameworks (e.g., Spring Boot).
• Design and implementation of distributed, event‑driven, low‑latency systems.
• API design using REST and gRPC, including versioning and backward compatibility.
• Hands‑on experience with LLMs, prompt orchestration, function calling and multi‑agent workflows.
• Building AI‑enabled microservices, integrating OpenAI/Google models, embeddings, vector databases and RAG pipelines.
• Cloud platforms – GCP (preferred), AWS or Azure.
• Networking fundamentals: HTTP/2, HTTP/3, load balancing, API gateways, service mesh.
• Use of Claude Code for production code generation.
• SRE practices: SLIs, SLOs, incident management, observability (tracing, logging, metrics).
• Security and compliance knowledge: OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, mTLS, SOC2, GDPR, HIPAA.
