About the role
Alcon is seeking a Principal Data Scientist to lead high‑impact AI initiatives within its Digital Health division. You will combine hands‑on technical execution with strategic leadership to deliver generative AI, agentic workflows, and classic machine‑learning solutions that advance eye‑care innovation.
Key responsibilities
- Lead end‑to‑end data‑science projects, ensuring timely delivery and measurable business impact.
- Design, develop, and evaluate GenAI/LLM systems such as retrieval‑augmented generation, summarisation, classification and insight generation.
- Build agentic AI solutions that automate multi‑step workflows and enhance decision‑making using structured and unstructured data.
- Apply numerical optimisation and classical ML techniques (time‑series forecasting, computer vision, NLP, anomaly detection, optimisation) across a broad portfolio of use cases.
- Implement scalable AWS architectures, including model development and deployment on SageMaker, LLM integration via Bedrock, event‑driven components with Lambda, containerised services on ECS/EKS, and data access through Redshift.
- Contribute to MLOps/LLMOps practices such as CI/CD, model/version management, automated testing, monitoring, drift detection and governance.
- Mentor junior data scientists and promote best practices in experimentation, engineering quality and stakeholder communication.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (or high‑school + 15 years relevant experience).
- Proven experience leading data‑science initiatives in a senior or principal capacity.
- Strong ability to translate business needs into technical solutions and to collaborate with product, engineering and business stakeholders.
Required skills
- AWS services: Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker, Lambda, ECS, EKS, Redshift.
- Generative AI and Large Language Model development.
- Machine‑learning techniques: computer vision, NLP, time‑series forecasting, anomaly detection, optimisation.
- MLOps/LLMOps practices: CI/CD, model versioning, automated testing, monitoring, drift detection, governance.
