Drone Design and Development Engineer

About the role

The project, funded by the Government, aims to develop and demonstrate drone and allied technologies at IIT Bombay. The Drone Design and Development Engineer will lead the conceptual design, analysis and testing of various UAV platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Perform design calculations for multi‑copter, fixed‑wing, VTOL‑hybrid and other UAV types.
• Select and optimise propulsion systems using multi‑objective optimisation and estimate preliminary performance.
• Design, develop and test test rigs for vibration, stress, strain and deflection analysis of UAV structures.
• Conduct tuning, calibration and integration of UAV subsystems.
• Create detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings and complete assemblies.
• Document design processes, test results and prepare technical reports.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure seamless system integration.
• Undertake any additional tasks as required by the project.

Required profile

• PhD, MTech/ME or BTech/BE in Mechanical, Aerospace or related engineering with relevant experience.
• Experience in conceptual sizing and design of UAVs using established methodologies.
• Strong knowledge of flight physics, material strength, composites, aerodynamics and structural analysis.

Required skills

• SolidWorks, CATIA and other 3D CAD software.
• Design for Manufacturing principles.
• Thermal and vibration management of UAV components.
• Propulsion system selection and performance estimation.
• Multi‑Objective Optimization techniques.
• Test‑rig design for vibration, stress, strain and deflection analysis.
• Detailed CAD modelling, engineering drawing creation and assembly.
• Technical documentation and reporting.
