Director of Software Engineering

About the role

Mastercard’s Payments Network Technology division is looking for a Director of Software Engineering to lead multiple engineering teams that deliver secure, reliable, and scalable payment‑network capabilities. The role blends people leadership, technical direction, and delivery accountability while partnering across product, architecture, operations, and security.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop several engineering teams, including managers and senior technical leaders.
• Define engineering direction aligned with product priorities, architecture standards, resiliency, security, and operational goals.
• Own delivery outcomes for a portfolio of services, balancing customer commitments, technical investment, risk, and capacity.
• Build an inclusive, accountable culture through hiring, coaching, succession planning, and career development.
• Collaborate with Product Management, Architecture, Operations, Security, and dependent programs to resolve priorities and delivery risks.
• Establish measurable standards for quality, automation, release readiness, reliability, and continuous improvement.
• Communicate portfolio status, risks, trade‑offs, and decisions to senior leadership.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading managers and multiple software engineering teams.
• Experience with large‑scale, highly available platforms and modern software engineering practices.
• Working knowledge of Java, Spring Boot, microservices, APIs, event‑driven systems, cloud‑native delivery, CI/CD, and observability.
• Ability to translate business strategy into executable engineering plans and organizational priorities.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
