Backend Software Engineer – Python & Java

About the role

Morningstar’s Indexes Technology Team is looking for a hands‑on Backend Software Engineer with strong Python expertise and working knowledge of Java. You will build and maintain REST APIs, micro‑services and data‑processing pipelines that power Morningstar’s index and mutual‑fund data platforms, working in an Agile environment alongside experienced engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Develop backend applications and REST APIs using Python frameworks such as FastAPI or Flask.
• Contribute to enterprise‑grade Java applications built with Spring Boot and Spring MVC.
• Design, build and maintain scalable micro‑services with clean, well‑tested code.
• Create and maintain unit and integration tests using pytest and JUnit.
• Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, stand‑ups and other Agile ceremonies.
• Debug, troubleshoot and resolve production issues across the technology stack.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline.
• 3–5 years of experience in backend software development.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving and communication skills.

Required skills

• Python 3.x, FastAPI, Flask, Pandas, NumPy.
• Java 17+ (Java 21 preferred), Spring Boot, Spring MVC.
• REST API design, micro‑services architecture.
• Testing frameworks: pytest, JUnit.
• Version control with Git.
• Agile/Scrum development practices.
• Familiarity with AWS services (S3, Lambda, ECS, RDS).
• PostgreSQL, SQL, Apache Kafka, Docker, basic Kubernetes.
• CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions or Jenkins.
