Staff Nurse CTVS – CCU

About the role

The Staff Nurse in a Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS) ICU provides critical care for patients recovering from major heart and vascular operations. The role involves continuous monitoring of vital signs, advanced cardiac equipment, and administration of high‑alert medications while working closely with surgeons, intensivists, and allied health professionals.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor vitals, invasive hemodynamic parameters (CVP, PA), ECG rhythms, ventilator settings, chest drains, urine output and cardiac device function.
• Administer high‑alert cardiac medications including inotropes, vasopressors, anti‑arrhythmics, anticoagulants, sedatives and insulin infusions.
• Respond rapidly to emergencies such as arrhythmias, low cardiac output, bleeding, respiratory distress or cardiac tamponade.
• Assist surgeons in the operating room, manage post‑operative pain, support early mobilization and handle procedures like IABP management.
• Collaborate with cardiac surgeons, intensivists, perfusionists and therapists to develop and execute care plans.
• Maintain precise documentation and educate patients and families on post‑operative care.
• Ensure strict aseptic technique and infection‑control practices.

Required profile

• B.Sc. Nursing qualification.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in a cardiac or cardiothoracic intensive care setting.
• Ability to work under pressure, make quick clinical decisions and maintain accurate records.
• Strong communication skills for patient and family education.

Required skills

• ECG and telemetry monitoring.
• Ventilator management.
• Invasive hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, PA lines).
• IABP (Intra‑Aortic Balloon Pump) operation.
• Administration of inotropes, vasopressors, anti‑arrhythmics, anticoagulants, sedatives and insulin infusions.
• Cardiac device management (pacemakers, defibrillators).
• Infection‑control and aseptic techniques.
• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency airway management.
