Staff Nurse – Acute Surgical Ward (Ward 7)

About the role

This 12‑month fixed‑term position is based on Ward 7 of Borders General Hospital, an acute surgical ward with 31 beds covering General Surgery, Gynaecology and Urology. The role offers the chance to join a supportive, multidisciplinary team focused on continuous improvement and high‑quality, person‑centred care.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients across surgical, gynaecology and urology specialties.
• Assess patient needs, develop care plans and deliver safe, high‑quality treatment.
• Supervise and support registered, unregistered staff and student nurses.
• Coordinate complex discharges in collaboration with the wider health‑care team, patients and families.
• Work flexibly across day and night shifts to maintain a 24/7 service.

Required profile

• Full registration with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
• Ability to work independently, make confident decisions and lead without direct supervision.
• Strong communication skills for multidisciplinary collaboration.
• Motivated, adaptable and committed to continuous improvement.

Required skills

• Clinical nursing competence in acute surgical settings.
• Leadership and supervisory experience.
