Staff Engineer, Product Infrastructure

About the role

Sarvam is building India’s sovereign AI platform and needs a senior engineer to own the core conversational‑AI backend that powers voice agents and campaigns at massive scale. You will be responsible for the end‑to‑end system that handles over 50 million minutes of conversations each month, ensuring reliability, performance and a great developer experience.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and operate the backend for agent, campaign and user management using Python and FastAPI.
• Build and maintain workflow orchestration with Temporal for complex, long‑running stateful operations.
• Ensure sub‑second latency SLOs, high availability and resilience for a multi‑tenant SaaS platform.
• Provide full observability – logging, metrics and tracing – to enable rapid production debugging.
• Develop integration‑testing infrastructure that supports fast, safe releases.
• Collaborate closely with the frontend team (Next.js) to deliver a seamless user experience.
• Champion a design‑first, documentation‑first engineering culture through RFCs and clear decision records.

Required profile

• 5–10 years of experience building production backend systems, with deep expertise in Python and FastAPI (or Golang).
• Proven track record of end‑to‑end ownership of large‑scale services, from design through production operation.
• Hands‑on experience with workflow orchestration at scale, preferably using Temporal.
• Experience building high‑scale, multi‑tenant, low‑latency distributed systems.
• Strong fundamentals in PostgreSQL and Redis, including schema design, query optimisation and caching strategies.
• Sound judgement on trade‑offs such as build‑vs‑buy, optimisation‑vs‑shipping, and abstraction‑vs‑inline implementation.
