Specialist Software Engineer - R&D Omics

About the role

Amgen's Research Informatics team is looking for a Specialist Software Engineer to develop and maintain software supporting target and biomarker discovery. The role sits within the company's mission to serve patients living with serious illnesses, across oncology, inflammation, general medicine and rare disease.

Key responsibilities

• Develop software to transform and visualise omics data (genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics) using languages such as Python, Java and R.
• Build data processing pipelines for large datasets in the cloud (e.g. Nextflow) and integrate with other data sources.
• Work with engineering team members so that services are reliable, maintainable and integrated into existing platforms.
• Follow best practices for testing and designing reusable code.
• Communicate between scientific management, technical staff and vendors to turn scientific needs into informatics solutions for data acquisition, integration and analysis.

Required profile

• Master's degree and 4 to 6 years in software development, IT or a related field, OR Bachelor's degree and 6 to 8 years, OR Diploma and 10 to 12 years.
• Experience in multi-functional teams including software/data engineers, business analysts, architects and cloud infrastructure teams, and agile practices.
• Preferred: 3+ years in biopharma or life sciences, biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience, and experience adopting Agile frameworks.

Required skills

• Code development (Python, R) and the software development lifecycle.
• Application development (RShiny, Plotly Dash).
• SQL and relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Databricks).
• Cloud platforms and infrastructure.
• Preferred: pipeline development with Python or Nextflow, RESTful APIs (Flask, MuleSoft), Benchling (LIMS), bioinformatics tools, Linux system configuration, AI/ML tools (SageMaker, LLMs), and Agile or SAFe certifications.
