Senior Staff Engineer – Gateway Services

About the role

The Gateway Services team builds Coupang’s traffic infrastructure layer using Service Mesh. This senior position will develop fine‑grained traffic control with state‑of‑the‑art technologies, partner with cross‑functional teams, and champion traffic‑management principles across the company.

Key responsibilities

• Build Service Mesh components collaborating within a small, highly talented team.
• Design and implement traffic‑management infrastructure using Rust, C++, or Go.
• Architect workload and service‑management infrastructure by creating critical components.
• Decompose complex problems into simple solutions following Coupang’s “Move with Urgency” and “Ruthless Prioritization” principles.
• Deliver scalable, high‑quality systems and raise operational excellence.
• Dive deep into critical issues, address root causes, and improve reliability.
• Collaborate with technical leaders to make the service extensible and enable innovation.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 12+ years of software development experience, including at least 2 years as a Technical Lead.
• Proven experience designing traffic‑management solutions at scale.
• Hands‑on experience with large‑scale distributed systems for the past three years.
• Strong background in Service Mesh (Istio) feature development.
• Excellent development skills in Go, Rust, or C++ with a track record of mission‑critical delivery.
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
