Patient Care Assistant – Neuroscience Unit

About the role

The Patient Care Assistant provides direct bedside support to patients in the Neuroscience Unit, working under the supervision of the Team Leader and registered nurses. This full‑time, day‑shift position focuses on delivering hands‑on care, monitoring vital signs, and ensuring a safe, comfortable environment for recovery.

Key responsibilities

• Measure and record temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height, and intake‑output.
• Encourage patients to turn, cough, use incentive spirometry, and perform deep‑breathing exercises as ordered.
• Assist with ambulation, transfers, wheelchair use, and patient transport.
• Provide personal care including bed baths, oral hygiene, dressing, linen changes, and bedside cleaning.
• Empty and document drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins.
• Collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens and perform range‑of‑motion (ROM) exercises.
• Perform phlebotomy and EKG procedures after required training.
• Respond promptly to call lights and patient requests, reporting any safety concerns.

Required profile

• Ability to work under the direction of a Team Leader and registered nurses.
• Willingness to perform hands‑on patient care and assist with activities of daily living.
• Commitment to maintaining a clean, safe patient environment.
• Availability for a full‑time day‑shift schedule.

Required skills

• Phlebotomy (with training).
• Electrocardiogram (EKG) performance (with training).
• Vital signs measurement and documentation.
• Specimen collection (urine, stool, sputum).
• Range of motion (ROM) assistance.
