Legal Counsel – Retail Banking

About the role

The Legal Counsel – Retail Banking Legal will lead legal operations for the Retail Banking division, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and internal policies. Based in Mumbai, the role supports litigation, investigations and the timely closure of banking transactions while driving operational efficiency and risk mitigation.

Key responsibilities

• Implement departmental policies, processes and procedures to maintain consistent legal operations.
• Draft and manage legal documentation such as letters, meeting minutes, memos, charts, tables and graphs for litigation and investigations.
• Provide legal support to internal client groups to facilitate timely transaction closures.
• Execute day‑to‑day legal activities in line with established standards and monitor legal costs within budget.
• Maintain and develop legal MIS, documenting interventions and defended matters.
• Assist in updating legal manuals and procedures for the Retail Banking group.
• Conduct legal research and stay updated on legislative changes, communicating key updates to senior team members.
• Ensure proper storage and easy retrieval of all legal documents.
• Review legal journals and court circulars, sharing relevant updates with senior colleagues.
• Recommend process and policy improvements to enhance operational efficiency and customer service quality.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) required; Master’s degree (LLM) preferred.
• Minimum 7 years of experience in legal roles within banking or financial services.
• Proven track record in handling litigation, legal documentation and regulatory compliance.

Required skills

• Proficiency with legal MIS.
• Experience using document management systems.
