Head of Research – Public Lab Complex

About the role

The Public Lab Complex (PLC) at Science Gallery Bangalore seeks a visionary Head of Research to lead its interdisciplinary research programme. You will shape the Public Labs Fellowship, Experimentor Programme, and public‑engagement initiatives, translating complex scientific ideas into accessible experiences for diverse audiences.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute a long‑term research strategy aligned with SGB’s mission and thematic priorities.
• Identify emerging, socially relevant research areas to inform public‑engagement programmes.
• Lead the conceptual development of annual themes and research fellowships linked to SGB’s exhibition season.
• Collaborate with partner institutes, curators, artists, scientists and educators to design and curate the Public Labs Fellowship Programme.
• Ensure intellectual rigour and interdisciplinary depth across all public‑facing content and publications.
• Build and maintain strategic partnerships with Indian and international universities, research centres and cultural organisations.
• Mentor fellows, early‑career researchers, experimentors, mediators and interns, fostering a culture of ethical research practice.
• Develop ethics guidelines, manage research budgets, grant applications and reporting requirements.

Required profile

• PhD or equivalent research experience.
• Proven ability to lead interdisciplinary research programmes.
• Strong academic foundation with experience bridging institutional research and public audiences.
• Excellent communication skills for diverse stakeholder engagement.
