Founding Design Engineer

About the role

Cardboard is building the next generation of storytelling and video editing tools. As a founding design engineer you will shape the look, feel and interaction of the product, working closely with a small, fast‑moving team that values craft and detail.

Key responsibilities

• Build and ship interactions, animations, micro‑interactions and core rendering engine features that power Cardboard.
• Optimize memory usage for large media projects using smart streaming, caching and browser primitives such as OPFS and Cache Storage.
• Develop reusable UI components across the editor timeline, microsites, micro‑apps and marketing assets.
• Experiment with new interaction patterns, shaders, and creative techniques to make the product feel alive.
• Write design documentation, set interface guidelines and raise accessibility standards.

Required profile

• Deep knowledge of easing, timing and animation principles.
• Fluent with GSAP, Framer Motion and Three.js.
• Comfortable working with shaders, dither effects and SVG animation performance.
• Solid experience in WebGL and GLSL, understanding rendering pipelines inside‑out.
• Obsessed with frontend performance and able to profile and systematically optimise browser bottlenecks.
• Bonus: interest in WebGPU and emerging graphics APIs.
