Director, Software Engineering - Big Data Platform & Storage

About the role

The Salesforce Big Data team is looking for an engineering leader to architect, implement, deliver and operate big‑data storage platforms and services that run in our own data centres as well as in public clouds (AWS, GCP) at massive scale. We are defining the next generation of trusted enterprise storage in the cloud and operate in a fast‑paced, AI‑first, agile environment.

Key responsibilities

• Create an AI‑first culture where engineers use AI tools for research, spikes and day‑to‑day sprint work.
• Champion AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) to accelerate feature development, code review, test generation and documentation.
• Partner with infrastructure teams to automate high‑frequency operational work such as on‑call runbooks, Day 2 operations, monitoring and alerting.
• Define and drive the vision for the teams with focus on AI, customer success, feature delivery, service ownership, availability, scalability and ease of use.
• Serve as subject‑matter expert for distributed systems, big‑data compute and storage technologies.
• Build and lead engineers to deliver reliable, scalable and secure big‑data services.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, architects, product owners and engineers to drive execution and delivery.
• Establish engineering best practices and tooling to improve CI/CD and code quality.
• Mentor and coach engineers and technical leads, investing in continuous development and employee wellbeing.
• Recruit and attract top talent.

Required profile

• B.E./B.Tech in Computer Science or equivalent.
• 12+ years of software development experience, with at least 3 years managing teams.
• Proven experience recruiting and building high‑performing teams.
• Hands‑on experience with distributed systems, NoSQL datastores and big‑data processing techniques.
• Experience building and operating large‑scale services on public clouds (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Familiarity with open‑source big‑data technologies such as Phoenix, HBase, Hadoop, Kafka, MongoDB, Spark, Presto, Hive, Airflow.
• Demonstrated mentorship and technical leadership abilities.
• Strong customer‑service orientation and desire to help others succeed.
• Focus on service ownership with experience defining SLOs/SLAs.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
