Director of Data Engineering

About the role

Mastercard is seeking a Director of Data Engineering to lead strategic data initiatives across its global enterprise data ecosystem. You will define and execute the technology vision for large‑scale Data Warehouse, Data Lakehouse, and Data Platform solutions that support analytics, AI, product innovation, and regulatory reporting.

Key responsibilities

• Define and execute long‑term data engineering strategy aligned with Mastercard’s AI, analytics, and digital payments roadmap.
• Lead architecture and implementation of scalable, secure Data Lakehouse and Data Warehouse platforms, establishing enterprise standards for ingestion, transformation, governance, and quality.
• Drive large‑scale cloud migration and platform modernisation programmes, adopting DataOps, DevOps, CI/CD, and Infrastructure‑as‑Code practices.
• Build and develop high‑performing engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous learning.
• Oversee delivery of strategic programmes, manage complex stakeholder relationships, and ensure alignment with business priorities and risk standards.

Required profile

• 15+ years delivering enterprise‑scale data warehouse, lake, and big data solutions.
• 7+ years of leadership experience managing engineering managers, architects, and distributed teams.
• Proven ability to lead global engineering organisations and large, multi‑team programmes.

Required skills

• Apache Kafka, Apache Spark, Scala, Java, Python, Hadoop ecosystem.
• Cloud‑native architecture on AWS: Amazon S3, EMR, Glue, Athena, EKS.
• Workflow orchestration tools: Airflow, NiFi.
• CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, DataOps frameworks.
• Relational and NoSQL databases: Oracle, SQL Server, Cassandra.
• Advanced SQL optimisation and performance tuning.
