Design Engineer I – Air‑Cooled Heat Exchangers

About the role

Chart Industries is seeking a Design Engineer I to develop air‑cooled heat exchangers for its cryogenic and rotating equipment portfolio. Based in Chennai, you will translate client specifications and project requirements into detailed mechanical designs that meet industry standards.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop air‑cooled heat exchangers, selecting finned tubes, headers, tube layouts and fan configurations.
• Create and review 3D models and 2D drawings with proper GD&T.
• Perform mechanical design calculations including tube thickness, header design, vibration and thermal stress analysis.
• Interpret process data sheets, PFDs/P&IDs and collaborate with process engineers on thermal and air‑side heat transfer requirements.
• Support thermal design tools such as HTRI during process‑mechanical integration.
• Ensure compliance with codes and standards (TEMA, ASME, API) and project specifications.
• Prepare design documentation: datasheets, GA and fabrication drawings, specifications, test plans and inspection checklists.
• Extract bill of materials from drawings and upload to the ERP system.
• Assist manufacturing by troubleshooting non‑conformities and contribute to cost‑optimisation and continuous improvement.

Required profile

• B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.
• 3–7 years of experience in mechanical design of heat exchangers or related equipment.
• Familiarity with cryogenic or industrial gas processing environments is a plus.

Required skills

• 3D modeling and 2D drafting with GD&T.
• Mechanical design calculations (thermal, vibration, stress).
• Use of thermal design software (HTRI or equivalent).
• Knowledge of standards: TEMA, ASME, API.
• Bill of materials extraction and ERP data entry.
