Assistant Vice President - Applied AI Engineer

About the role

Barclays is hiring an Assistant Vice President - Applied AI Engineer in Bengaluru (the role is also open to the Pune office). You will design and build core AI/ML solutions that power the bank's enterprise AI capabilities, taking ownership of significant AI subsystems such as agentic workflows, LLM applications, evaluation pipelines and MLOps tooling. You bridge AI architecture and hands-on implementation, delivering secure, scalable, production-grade solutions while mentoring junior engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and deliver high-quality software using industry-standard languages, frameworks and tools, ensuring code is scalable, maintainable and performance-optimized
• Collaborate with product managers, designers and other engineers to define requirements, devise solution strategies and integrate with business objectives
• Take part in code reviews, share knowledge and stay informed of technology trends
• Follow secure coding practices and implement unit testing
• As an Assistant Vice President, advise on decisions, help shape policy, lead a team on complex tasks, set objectives, coach employees and manage risk and controls

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree (or above) in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related discipline
• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years building AI/ML systems, scalable ML infrastructure or model-serving platforms at enterprise scale
• Ability to work on system design from ideation to completion with limited supervision and to communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders

Required skills

• Python (FastAPI, asyncio) and/or Go/Java, with production APIs and microservices
• Agentic AI systems and LLM applications, including multi-agent orchestration and tool use
• Prompt engineering, RAG architectures and frameworks such as Strands, LangGraph and Google ADK
• AWS (EC2/EKS, S3, IAM, RDS, Bedrock or SageMaker), Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, CloudFormation/Terraform and observability tools
• Preferred: evaluation frameworks, vector databases, AI safety controls, AI security frameworks, model fine-tuning, Zero Trust and financial services compliance
